Use the AddSort Method of the XPathExpression Object in Visual Basic .NET
KB: 317084
This step-by-step article demonstrates how to use the AddSort method of the System.Xml.XPath.XPathExpression class to sort the results of an XML Path Language (XPath) query that is based on a specified element or attribute.

Execute XPath Queries by Using the System.Xml.XPath Classes
KB: 317069
This step-by-step article demonstrates how to use the classes in the System.Xml.XPath namespace to execute XPath queries in .NET applications.

Use the System.Xml.XmlDocument Class to Run XPath Queries in Visual Basic .NET
KB: 317018
This step-by-step article describes how to run XPath queries by using the SelectNodes and SelectSingleNode methods of the XmlDocument class.

The System.Xml.XmlDocument class implements the core XML Document Object Model (DOM) parser for the .NET Framework. You can use the SelectNodes and the SelectSingleNode methods of the System.Xml.XmlDocument class to programmatically run XPath queries against XML data that is loaded into the DOM.

Specify Namespaces When You Use an XmlDocument to Execute XPath Queries in Visual Basic .NET
KB: 316913
This step-by-step article demonstrates how to use the System.Xml.XmlDocument class to execute XPath queries against XML documents that define and use namespace prefixes to qualify element and attribute names.

Use the ExecuteXmlReader Method of the SqlCommand Class in Visual C# .NET
KB: 316701
You can use the ExecuteXmlReader method of the System.Data.SqlClient.SqlCommand class to load the results of SQL Extensible Markup Language (XML) queries from Microsoft SQL Server into a System.Xml.XmlReader object. You can use this method to run server-side for XML queries and to run queries that return well-formed XML data as text. NOTE: This method is not available in the OLE DB .NET managed provider (it is specific to the SQL Server .NET managed provider) and does not work with a SQL 7.0 database.

Convert an ADO.NET DataSet to ADO Recordset in Visual Basic .NET
KB: 316337
This step-by-step article describes how to convert an ADO.NET DataSet object to an ActiveX Data Objects (ADO) Recordset object.

This article uses the XML approach to convert the DataSet to an ADO Recordset. The XML format that is persisted in ADO differs from the XML format of the DataSet. Therefore, you can simplify the conversion process if you convert from one XML format to the other. The ADO Persist provider facilitates to load the .xml file to an ADO Recordset, as long as it is in the ADO XML format.

Note When you use this method, you can only create a read-only ADODB Recordset. To create an updatable Recordset, create an empty connected Recordset, and then insert all the rows.

Compiler Errors When You Use #import with XML in Visual C++ .NET
KB: 316317
When you use MSXML parser dynamic-link libraries (DLLs) such as Msxml.dll, Msxml2.dll, Msxml3.dll, or Msxml4.dll to compile a Visual C++ .NET project with #import, you may receive the following compiler error messages:

c:\sample\test.cpp(12) : error C2872: 'IXMLDOMDocumentPtr' : ambiguous symbol

could be 'c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\include\comdefsp.h(1228) : _com_ptr_t<_IIID> IXMLDOMDocumentPtr' with [ _IIID=_com_IIID ]

or 'c:\sample\Debug\msxml3.tlh(226) : MSXML2::IXMLDOMDocumentPtr'
-or-

c:\sample\test.cpp(16) : error C2039: 'async' : is not a member of 'IXMLDOMDocument' c:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio .NET\Vc7\PlatformSDK\Include\MsXml.h(1845) : see declaration of 'IXMLDOMDocument'
-or-

c:\sample\test.cpp(27) : error C2660: 'IXMLDOMDocument::load' : function does not take 1 parameters You may also see other C2039 and C2660 errors in the output. The workaround that is described in the following Knowledge Base article does not resolve the compiler errors with Microsoft Visual C++ .NET.

XML Web Service Created with ASP.NET Does Not Support Multidimensional Arrays
KB: 316273
When you try to obtain a Web Services Description Language (WSDL) document from a Web service by using a Web service method that contains a return type or parameter type that is a multidimensional array, you receive the following HTML error message:

Cannot serialize object of type System.String[,]. Multidimensional arrays are not supported.

If you call the Web Service, an exception is generated. XML Web services that are created with ASP.NET do not support multidimensional arrays.

Display an XML Document in ASP.NET by Using the Xml Web Server Control
KB: 315906
This step-by-step article demonstrates how to use the Xml Web server control so that you can display an Extensible Markup Language (XML) document by using Extensible Stylesheet Language Transformation (XSLT) from within the Microsoft .NET Framework. The Xml control makes it easy to use XML data in a Web Form. The Xml control encapsulates the code that the page author traditionally adds.

Manage Multilanguage Web Forms Solutions in Visual Studio .NET
KB: 315903
This article demonstrates how to use an XML data-island and the .NET Xml Web server control to create a small, multilanguage Web Application project that displays Extensible Markup Language (XML) data. The main application is built in Visual Basic .NET. The application uses a Visual C# Class Library component to illustrate multilanguage references and implementation inheritance.
