Rick Jelliffe turns wiki text into XML -- via SGML!
3/3/2004
|
Wikis are nice for typing. XML is nice for processing. SGML is a standard compiler compiler language for specifying conversions from one to the other. The nice thing about Wiki formats is that they reduces the number of keystrokes needed to mark a document up (to the level of very simple HTML) to the same number as a nice, swanky, custom application needs.

Kendall Clark on the inaugural W3C Semantic Web Interest Group meeting.
3/3/2004
|
I'm spending this week -- in my role as a researcher at the University of Maryland -- in Cannes-Mandelieu, France, at the W3C's 2004 Technical Plenary. Yes, Cannes is as beautiful as you might think. In fact, it's more beautiful than I imagined; it reminds me, somehow, of a cross between Seattle and Phoenix. Weird, I know, but trust me: you should plan a visit to the French Riviera if at all possible.

Tom White describes how to use XML catalogs from Java.
3/3/2004
|
XML documents often refer to other documents that an XML processor has to retrieve in order to make sense of the main document. These external resources, typically referred to by URIs, may be local files; or they may be remote, distributed across the web. In an ideal world the difference would be invisible, since it would be as cheap to access a remote resource as a local one. However, in the real world network failures do occur, and it is wise to design applications that take this into account.

|
The world of XML is vast and growing, with a huge variety of standards and technologies that interact in complex ways. It can be difficult for beginners to navigate the most important aspects of XML, and for users to keep track of new entries and changes in the space. XML is a basic syntax upon which you develop local and global vocabularies. Uche Ogbuji has presented the most important standards relating to XML in three in-depth articles. In this fourth article, he provides a detailed cross-reference of all the covered standards.

Loading Properties from XML: Stop the key-value pair insanity
3/3/2004
|
The Properties class is an old favorite, around since the beginning of Java programming time with very few changes. The Tiger release of J2SE enhances this class, which allows you not only to use it to specify key-value pairs on a single line separated by an equal sign, but also to use XML files to load and save those key-value pairs. In this installment of Taming Tiger, John Zukowski demonstrates how to use this updated work horse. Share your thoughts on this article with the author and other readers in the accompanying discussion forum. (You can also click Discuss at the top or bottom of the article to access the forum.)

Filling Your Web Needs With RSS
3/3/2004
|
You may have heard a new buzzword making the rounds. RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, could change the way we aggregate and read information from the Web and give companies a new way to deliver their messages directly to customers. But an ongoing standards battle may hurt the adoption of the technology before it really takes off.
RSS is simply an XML document, often called a "feed," that describes content generated from a Web site. This could be news, press releases or almost any other type of content. The beauty of RSS is that with a program that can read and aggregate different RSS feeds, users can access the content that's relevant to them without having to surf the Web or subscribe to e-mail newsletters. It's literally information at your fingertips. There are a number of free RSS readers, but my personal favorite is NewsGator, an aggregator from NewsGator Technologies that ties directly into Outlook and lets me read news there and post material to my personal weblog as well.

Oracle9i SOAP Vulnerability Found
2/26/2004
|
Oracle Corp. last week revealed that a potential security vulnerability has been discovered in its Oracle9i Application Server and Oracle9i Database Server. The vulnerability is within SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) messages whose XML contains carefully constructed DTDs (Data Type Definitions), according to Oracle Technology Network's security alert. The alert notes that SOAP is the basis of Web services, which are therefore affected as well. To exploit the vulnerability, a malicious user requires access to SOAP-enabled servers. A knowledgeable attacker can exploit the vulnerability to cause a DoS (denial of service) against the database and application servers. XML and SOAP are installed by default in both the database and application servers when the Oracle HTTP Server is installed.
